Famed for its wide range of excellent high-value subwoofers, American Ohio-based speaker specialist SVS now introduces the Prime Pinnacle floorstanding speakers, the top-shelf model of the company’s popular Prime series.
Due to arrive in Australia in late June 2019, the new Prime Pinnacle speakers are a 3-way multi-driver and slim-line floorstander finished in black ash or a high quality black gloss. The Prime Pinnacle speakers feature custom designed drivers which have been optimised to work in unison, via the company’s ‘SoundMatch’ crossover technology, to produce a wide bandwidth speaker which also promises accurate inter-driver tonal matching and excellent dynamic expression, the latter something that the company’s superb subwoofers have always exhibited.
The FEA-optimised 25mm aluminium dome tweeter has been matched to a composite glass fibre 125mm dedicated midrange driver (derived from SVS’s flagship Ultra series) which, for the low frequencies, is supported via a trio of long throw/low distortion 165mm polypropylene drivers. The midrange and bass drivers feature cast ABS fibreglass composite baskets and vented voice coil formers which allow cooling resulting high power handling. The slim-line cabinet is rear reflex-ported via a triple 2-inch port arrangement (one per woofer) said to provide good low frequency extension. Unusually, each port has been tuned at subtly different frequencies with SVS stating that, in conjunction with the three individual sub enclosures, the arrangement provides an overall smooth and powerful low frequency register.
SVS’s specifications show good frequency extension as per the quoted 29 Hz to 25 kHz +/-3dB and reasonable efficiency with 88dB (2.83V at 1 meter full-space, 300-3kHz). Although no minimum impedance has been given, the 8 ohms nominal figure would suggest the Prime Pinnacle to be a reasonably easy load on any good quality amplifier, with the company suggesting 20 watts minimum and 300 watts maximum.
