Factory Tour – Accuphase Laboratory
Let’s talk obsessive-level loyalty. As far as audio goes, there are perhaps… ten brands, at most, that make audio enthusiasts go weak at the knees. I’m talking fervent admiration and unwavering devotion. Near the very top of that select list sits Accuphase Laboratory. Yes, the quintessentially Japanese success story, widely revered for its uncompromising quality, bulletproof reliability, and intelligent engineering. Then there’s that trademark gold finish and unmistakably elegant industrial design. Yes, I too have admired Accuphase over the years, so what a privilege it was when I was asked to visit the company’s headquarters in Yokohama. And now? I get it. Come join me.

Factory Tour – DS Audio
In just a few short years, relatively speaking, Japanese company DS Audio has stimulated the imagination of analogue-loving audio enthusiasts from around the world with its reinvented optical cartridge. While the optical cartridge is said to be first conceptualised back in the 1940s, with Toshiba launching a moderately successful working model in the 1970s, the technology has flourished in the last couple of decades thanks to Digital Stream Corporation’s (AKA DS Audio) refinements using modern LED innovations. Since that crucial step in its evolution, the optical cartridge, as perfected by DS Audio, has climbed to the upper echelons of audio desirability. What’s more, DS Audio stands alone as the sole major manufacturer of optical cartridges worldwide. I visited the company’s factory following the Tokyo International Audio Show 2025 (feature here). Here’s what I discovered.

Tokyo International Audio Show 2025
Ahhh, Japan… I’d drop just about everything to visit the land of the Rising Sun. The culture of respect, mindfulness, and the deep appreciation for beauty and meaning, even in imperfect things… kintsugi, it feeds my heart and soul. There’s a stillness of mind and presence woven through age-old rituals and the quiet, artful ceremonies. Grace and tradition that stir in me a sense of… gentle and beautiful melancholy. So, Tokyo show time bundled with a couple of factory tours? I’m there, man. And with all its quirks and unique charm, the Tokyo International Audio Show (TIAS) somehow reflects many of the sentiments I’ve described. Care to join me for a tour?

AudioQuest Rocket 88 REL Subwoofer Cable
Reviewing a subwoofer cable might sound like the final frontier of audio geekery, but here we are diving into the AudioQuest Rocket 88 REL subwoofer cable, a beautifully built, made-to-order piece of gear aimed squarely at high-performance systems. But let’s get something out of the way up front: no cable, no matter how exotic, can replace the presence of a subwoofer. And that’s exactly the challenge I ran into.

Telos Audio Design Monster Series Power Station Standard Edition & Earth Grounding Standard Edition
When I cut my teeth as a sound engineer, it wasn’t in some pristine temple of acoustic perfection. It was in studios that reeked of stale smoke, the walls painted with decades of sweat, tears, and spilled Budweiser, and for two years I had the privilege of having custodianship of SAE Glasgow during the holidays. I’d stay back long after the sessions ended, the last of the band long gone, and I’d cue up Sheryl Crow’s Tuesday Night Music Club. “I Shall Believe” would drift through the room, carried by a pair of Tannoy System 15 monitors, filling the room with a weight that didn’t come from decibels but from soul.
