Digital audio specialist dCS has announced an ambitious no-holds-barred five-box music playback system teeming with the company’s newest, most advanced digital technologies.
The engineering team at dCS started the project’s R&D with the intent to improve and take the company’s digital playback components to an even higher level of technical sophistication. Part of the design aim was to reevaluate “transport audio, timing and control signals and improve clocking arrangements between audio components” while also improving the ergonomics of playback management and music discovery based on direct feedback from dCS owners from around the world.
The five-chassis system features a ‘User Interface’ component accompanied by a ‘Master Clock’, two mono digital-to-analogue converter chassis (one per channel, of course), and a physically larger ‘Core’ component. Further, slated for introduction in 2025, dCS is planning yet another component as a matching dedicated CD/SACD transport.
Several new dCS technologies have been introduced in the Varèse design. New in the Varèse system are key new technologies such as ‘Tomix’ a patented clocking system, ‘ACTUS’ which handles the audio, control and timing signals between each component, and a comprehensively refined version of dCS’s renowned ‘Ring’ DAC which the company claims is “the biggest change to our DAC architecture in a generation”. Jitter reduction, lower electronic noise, crosstalk elimination, increased linearity, and other benefits have been wrung from the new design properties.
Further, dCS has designed the new ‘dCS Mosaic ACTUS’ app for full control in addition to the provided bespoke remote controller. There are supplementary innovations applied to the electronic circuits, the individual power supplies, and to mechanical chassis architecture. dCS has also designed the bespoke ACTUS cable interface system which carries signal from chassis to chassis via a multi-pin system.
Davis Steven, Managing Director at dCS stated the Varèse system, “is the most challenging undertaking of our careers in audio. We set out to redesign state-of-the-art whilst at the same time creating an entirely new and immersive user experience. We knew we had to embrace a singular vision and be brave and relentless in our pursuit of this, to bring listeners a system that is measurably and demonstrably special and exceeds the capabilities of our current body of work.”
dCS is planning to release further technical white papers in the following weeks. The new dCS Varèse Music System starts shipping in late 2024.
