Featuring substantial enhancements and technology innovations, SVS’s new PB-5000 and SB-5000 high power subwoofers cater to both the highest quality audio and multi-channel systems.
Taking inspiration from SVS’s 17-Ultra R|Evolution Reference subwoofers the new units bring those levels of performance to a more affordable price point. The PB-5000 and SB-5000 subwoofers feature the company’s latest proprietary advancements in driver and amplification technology.
For the first time, the brand new 15-inch (380 mm) low frequency transducer features an in-house designed dual edge-wound voice coil scheme said to optimise the electromagnetic current from the in-built amplifier to the woofers massive 17.2 “toroidal ferrite magnet motor”. This allows extreme driver control and high power transfer. Thermal distortion is controlled while magnetic field strength is enhanced via the driver’s copper-clad aluminium voice coil. Further features include a long-excursion “Parabolic NBR” driver surround and a lightweight rigid glass fibre laminated dust cap.
The driver is powered by SVS’s first-ever 2000 watts continuous (over 5000 watts peak power) dual monoblock Class-D amplifier the company calls an STA-2000D. Featuring eight 60 amp 200 volt MOSFETs each high current amplifier handles a voice coil (dual voice coil scheme) while providing “near limitless” power to the transducer. In light of the tremendous power on tap, SVS has included an in-built AC line conditioner featuring power factor correction which monitors signal quality in order to control AC fluctuations.
SVS has also included its most powerful 295 MHz DSP engine derived from Analogue Devices. The company states its DSP is the most comprehensive ever included in a home subwoofer. In-room response is optimised while AC voltage is further monitored for stability. Thermal distortion and current are also monitored while extended headroom is provided via the combination of the advanced DSP and the associated digital-to-analogue (DAC) system. Together, the DSP and DAC allow a massive Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of 120dB.
The SB-5000 and PB-5000 R|Evolution subwoofers are managed by “the most comprehensive” smartphone app. The app provides access to filter, phase and polarity settings in addition to room gain compensation, port tuning for the tri-ported PB-5000, power management, volume control (of course) and more. Coming soon is an ‘Auto EQ Subwoofer Room Correction’ feature which will deal with in-room anomalies. When it lands, the feature can be accessed via the SVS app and will calibrate from the smartphone’s in-built microphone.
The frequency response specifications for the SB-5000 are 17 Hz to 280 Hz +/-3dB while the PB-5000 specifies 15 Hz to 180 Hz +/-3dB in standard mode with all ports open, 13 Hz to 180 Hz +/-3dB in extended mode with two ports open and 16 Hz to 270 Hz +/-3dB all ports sealed.
The 5000 R|Evolution SB-5000 and PB-5000 subwoofers are available in black piano gloss and premium black wood veneers. Auditioning can be arranged via importer Interdyn’s network of audio specialists around the country.
